This year’s International Women’s Day will be celebrated on the 8th of March. I know it may seem really “generous” to be allocated a whole 24 hours to commemorate the achievements of nearly half of the population, but this year is different. In the past year alone, women leaders (such as New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Germany) have received global praise for their effective handling of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Not forgetting Kamala Harris making history by becoming the first female, Black and South Asian American Vice President. Previously, I had never thought much about International Women’s Day, but after starting Spill The Tea Creative and interacting with women of such diverse backgrounds (from single mums to college dropouts), I was so inspired. That’s why I intend to celebrate International Women’s Day this year, here’s how I am going to do it:
More often than not, events meant for international women’s day are marketed and involves women only. But for meaningful conversations to take place, it is crucial to deliberately get men involved. That’s why I will be inviting and encouraging my partner to champion gender equality together.
Even though I specialised in feminist studies and international relations back in college, I am not going to start labelling myself as an expert. That’s why this 8th of March I will be attending She-EO’s Virtual 2021 Summit to be inspired by a panel consisting of the world’s leading individuals in the economic, food, education, and various other sectors. If you’re interested in attending this with me, drop me a DM (and let’s get inspired together!)
Understanding the challenges that other women face is a crucial step to advocate for gender equality. Books that are already in my cart are Educated by Tara Westover, No Logo by Naomi Klein and We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Let me know if you’ve read any of these books and how they have shaped your perspectives today!
